Common sunflower

Common Sunflower (Helilanthus annuus) is one of my favorite flowers. They are drought tolerant, and grow like a weed; in fact they are considered to be a weed. They are an annual, (growing season is only one year) prefer full sun, will grow in any soil. Each year new ones will grow from the seeds dropped from the previous year. They are actually two different flowers, the petals are called the ray flowers and the middle is called the disk flowers each tiny seed it its own flower.
